Upcoming!!! History & Heritage Walk n Talk with Brendan Matthews

December 4 @ 14:00 - 15:00

Join Community Historian Brendan Matthews at Sonairte for his popular and fascinating Walk n Talk.

It will begin in the old 18th-century courtyard, where Brendan will speak about the initial construction of the farmhouse, courtyard and associated buildings and what life was like here in days of old.
It will then proceed through the wonderful walled garden of the 18th-century house, which is worked today by a dedicated number of volunteers, producing a huge variety of organic fruit, vegetables and herbs at the National Ecology Centre at Sonairte. Making its way along the north bank of the adjacent River Nanny, Brendan will go on to outline the pre-history, archaeology & mythology of the surrounding area through the tales of the ancient chieftains and their kin who resided here more than two thousand years ago.
Proceeding through the beautiful, magical & mystical wood at Sonairte, it then makes its way along the bank of the Nanny Water, where there are some stunning views of the surrounding natural heritage and a great place to view the old Ballygarth Castle on the opposite bank of the river.
Brendan will then lead the tour up to the summit of the wooded hill and to the ancient Rath or Hillfort site, where there may be seen magnificent views over the beautiful Nanny Estuary and the Irish Sea. Brendan will conclude his tour at the Hillfort where he will speak about the origins and function of the Rath/Hillfort and the people who resided here, along with the various clans, invaders and colonists who arrived and settled in this location in the vicinity of the Estuary of the great Nanny River throughout our storied-past.
