Sonairte has successfully run a Development Education project for Teenagers since 2013. This project is funded by World Wise Global Schools as part of an Irish Aid Development Education grant.
This year we worked with 8 schools/groups in Dublin, Meath and Louth.
Our project is called ‘Fierce Youth: Us with the world’.
Students, and their teachers, take part in 3 workshops. The first one takes place in the school, the second and third at Sonairte. The 3rd session involves students from two different schools coming together to share their insights and unique perspectives.
Throughout the project, students explore their role as Global citizens and their responsibility to act as change makers in building more just and sustainable communities through simple positive actions. They are supported to engage in projects that complement and enhance their learning.
Nature connection and mindfulness are integrated into the programme as we firmly believe that change must first start within ourselves and to be an engaged pro-active citizen, we must develop the skills of connection, empathy, adaptability, collaboration and high self-esteem. Furthermore research has shown that all of these skills are nurtured and cultivated through immersion in nature connection programmes.
The project offers support to teachers through teacher training workshops, where teachers passionate about/ or who wish to learn more about Development Education (DE),
come together to explore best practice and innovative ways of integrating DE into their classrooms.
